Matthew Hutchinson
Matthew (Matt) Hutchinson currently serves Eddy County as Undersheriff for the Eddy County Sheriffs Department.

Having moved to Carlsbad in 1992, Matt graduated from Carlsbad High School (in 2002) then graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in from New Mexico State University in 2010. While attending college, Matt entered the law enforcement academy. He began his career in 2007 as a Deputy with the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office. During his tenure at the Sheriff’s Office, Matt has been promoted through the ranks to Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and currently to Undersheriff/Chief Deputy for Sheriff Mark Cage. For more than a decade he
has held a supervisory or administrative role in the Sheriff’s Office command structure.

Matt serves as a Director on two Carlsbad non-profit Boards. These organizations; Affirming Hearts (formally Carlsbad Advocacy Center) and The Carlsbad Coalition, have confirmed Matt’s belief that community organizations are an asset for the community and for the people they serve. Matt is dedicated to researching citizen rights laws of the State of New Mexico to ensure all citizen’s rights are upheld and protected.

Matt graduated from the Northwestern University Center for Public Service Command College in 2022. This prestigious organization offers management and leadership training/education for law enforcement professionals.

Matt has been married to his high school sweetheart and local realtor, Laura Hutchinson, for eighteen years. They have two children who attend school in the Carlsbad School District. Matt and his family have a strong faith in the Lord and strive to make God the center of their
lives.

Matt views himself as a servant leader and believes the goal of the leader is to serve others. He believes that the Office of the Sheriff is one of the greatest American institutions in our country that exists to protect the rights of the people. Matt knows that the greatest strength of Eddy County are the people. He believes the citizens know what is best for them in a Sheriff. “As your Sheriff I pledge to listen to the voices, opinions and ideas in our community. I would be honored to continue the traditions of this Office.”

Mark Cage
​
Mark Cage is currently serving his second term as Sheriff of Eddy County which followed 4 years as Undersheriff. He is a retired US Navy Chief who has served over 40 years in public service. Mark achieved his Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern New Mexico University at the age of 46 and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Southeast New Mexico College in Carlsbad. Mark has championed the drug enforcement efforts in NM serving over 10 years on the NM High Intensity Drug Task Force (HIDTA) Executive Board as well as the chairman of Region VI Drug Task Force and the Pecos Valley Task Force. He will serve as President of NM Association of
Counties for the second time and is the first Sheriff to ever hold the title. Mark is currently Vice President of the NM Sheriff’s Association and will take over as President for 2023/2024. He also serves as Secretary for the National Sheriff’s Association.
Mark is married to local realtor, Carolyn Cage. Together they have five children and 11 grandchildren, most of whom reside in Eddy County.

Mark describes himself as a transformational leader and believes that the Office of the Sheriff is one of the greatest American institutions that exists to protect the rights of the people. Mark has been and continues to be an advocate and warrior for the citizens of Eddy County through the state legislative sessions when New Mexican’s Second Amendment rights are constantly under attack. He stood up for and assisted local businesses through the stranglehold of the state’s over-reaching COVID restrictions.
Mark’s life is the definition of a public servant and it is his greatest desire to continue to serve the citizens of Eddy County in the capacity of
Undersheriff for Sheriff Matt Hutchinson.
